What Documents Do You Need to Apply for Affordable Housing in LA?
Nothing stalls an affordable housing application faster than a missing document. Property managers and housing agencies verify everything — and if you cannot produce a document quickly, the next applicant on the list gets the unit. Here is what to have ready before you apply, so you can move fast when a listing opens.
Identity documents
Government-issued photo ID (driver's license, state ID, or passport) for every adult in the household
Social Security cards for all household members
Birth certificates for minor children
Proof of income
Applications count all income for everyone in the household:
The four most recent pay stubs (or a letter from your employer)
Most recent tax return, especially if you are self-employed
Benefit award letters — Social Security, SSI, disability, unemployment, CalWORKs, CalFresh
Child support or alimony documentation
Pension or annuity statements
Assets and banking
The two or three most recent bank statements for all accounts
Statements for retirement accounts, investments, or other assets
Rental history
Contact information for current and previous landlords (typically two to three years)
A current lease, if you have one
References who can confirm your reliability as a tenant
Pro tips
Make copies of everything, and keep a set as photos or PDFs on your phone.
Keep one physical folder so you can hand over documents at an interview the same day.
Refresh pay stubs and bank statements regularly — older than 60–90 days usually does not count.
If you cannot locate a document (tax transcripts, benefit letters), order replacements now, before you need them.
